Content Credentials are the signed note a person reads
Content Credentials are the provenance note a person is meant to read. Think of them as a signed note that can travel with a picture: who made it, whether it was edited, whether a generative tool was involved. Under the hood that note is often a C2PA manifest. The wider question — where the file came from and what changed — is content provenance. The badge you might see in Photoshop or on a website is the presentation, not a universal AI sticker.

What are Content Credentials?
Content Credentials are the provenance note a person is meant to read. Think of them as a signed note that can travel with a picture: who made it, whether it was edited, whether a generative tool was involved. Under the hood that note is often a C2PA manifest. A missing badge does not prove the picture is human-made.
Adobe has been the most visible product name. Camera makers and some AI image products attach credentials at export. Social networks may display a label inspired by credentials, a classifier, or both. Display is a product decision and it moves.
If you need to know whether this file still carries a credential, inspect the file. Do not infer from a screenshot of someone else’s post.
What a credential can say
A tool or issuer name.
Actions such as created, edited, or opened.
That a generative model was used — or that a camera produced the original.
Nothing at all, if the packet was stripped or never written.
What it cannot say
It cannot prove a picture is “safe,” “original art,” or “not AI” just by existing. It cannot survive every WhatsApp compress. It is not EXIF GPS.
They are the provenance note a person is meant to read: who made a file, whether it was edited, and whether a generative tool was involved. The technical packet underneath is often C2PA. They are not a universal AI sticker. A missing badge does not prove the picture is human-made. The broader record is content provenance.
What does a Content Credentials verify tool show?
When a manifest is still in the file, a verify view can list the issuer, actions such as created or edited, and the tools named on those actions. Ingredients show up when the manifest includes them. Social-media download counts are not part of that record. Pixel width and height can appear inside an EXIF assertion, or you can read them from the file itself. The walkthrough is how to check Content Credentials, and the checker is the Content Credentials checker.
Are Content Credentials an AI watermark?
No. They are a signed provenance record. Pixel watermarks are a different mechanism. AI watermarks.
Can I add credentials to any photo?
Some editors can attach them when they export. This site inspects and can strip supported packets from a sharing copy. It is not a credential issuer.
Can I remove Content Credentials?
Adobe’s Manage Content Credentials page, updated 18 August 2026, says deleting a cloud credential removes it from Adobe’s cloud and from Inspect search. That delete does not remove credentials already embedded in a file, credentials on other files that used the asset as an ingredient, or credentials published on a website. Credentials applied to disclose generative AI cannot be deleted there. Metadata Cleaner can drop a supported embedded C2PA packet from a JPEG, PNG, or WebP sharing copy. A pixel watermark such as SynthID remains, and an Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or YouTube label can remain too.
