Check MP4 and MOV metadata on this device?
Open an MP4 or MOV and read the container fields this page can parse. A location is shown only when a location tag is present. This page does not remove tags and it does not compress the video. The video stays in this tab.

The video stays in this tab. Tag values are not uploaded.

What this viewer can show
Container brand, duration, track size, sample-entry codec, creation and modification time, encoder or title tags, and a location tag when one is stored in a form this parser understands.
Why the fields matter
A phone clip or an export can still carry a creation time, an encoder name, or a location atom. Reading the file tells you what is in this copy. It does not tell you what a chat app will do after you send it.
Formats this viewer reads
| Format | What is read |
|---|---|
| MP4 | ftyp, mvhd, tkhd, stsd, udta/ilst, 3GPP loci |
| MOV | the same ISO-BMFF fields when the file stores them |
Not in the tested set: WebM, MKV, AVI.
What stays on your device
The file is parsed locally. Frame rate and bitrate appear only when the local media parser returns them.
Reading tags is not compressing or cleaning
The video compressor makes a smaller file. It is not described here as a tool that removes every metadata atom. The Metadata Cleaner can open MP4 and MOV. Engine fixtures MR-MP4-005 and MR-MOV-006 passed container filtering. The published browser run checked JPEG and PDF, not those video fixtures.
Supported MP4 and MOV container tags can be neutralized without re-encoding in the Metadata Cleaner.
Limits
- WebM, MKV, and AVI are not part of the tested set.
- GPS is not guessed. No location tag means this viewer did not find one.
- A cleared user-data box in the lab filter is not a promise about every private tag.
Questions about video tags
Does this upload the video?
No. Parsing stays in the browser tab.
Will every MP4 show a GPS point?
Only if the file contains a location tag this parser understands. No row means the tag was not found, not that a place is impossible to see in the frames.
Can this page strip the tags?
No. It is a viewer. Container filtering for MP4 and MOV was engine-tested in September 2026 and was not part of the published browser fixture run.
Where do I make the file smaller?
The video compressor is the size tool. Use it when you need a smaller file, not as a metadata eraser.
