What it reads

The page reads the EXIF GPS block of a JPEG, WebP or PNG and prints latitude, longitude and altitude when present, together with camera maker and model, orientation, date taken, pixel size and software. It uses the same parser as the Image metadata viewer.

Measured 2026-10-18 with Chrome/154.0.8037.92 on 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900K. The tags in the test photos were written with Pillow and point at the Eiffel Tower (48.858222, 2.294500). They are not from an iPhone, so this shows what the viewer prints, not what an iPhone writes. Raw output: docs/evidence/runs/2026-10-18-photo-location-viewer.json.

iPhone photos

This page does not open HEIC, and an iPhone photo may be one. Apple's share Options list Automatic, Current and Most Compatible, and say Most Compatible files may convert to JPEG (Apple: Share photos and videos on iPhone (iOS 26)). The Apple steps for finding a photo's place on the phone are in Apple: See photo and video information on iPhone. More in How to see where a photo was taken and What an iPhone photo's location reveals.

What a location does and does not prove

When Preview shows no location

Apple’s Preview guide says that if a photo contains GPS information, Preview can show a world map and a street map. Choose Tools, then Show Location Info. If that item is gray, the image doesn’t contain location information. Scroll to the GPS section and use Show in Maps for the street map. See where a photo was taken in Preview. Removing the location in Photos, and the Windows limit, are on Remove a photo location on Mac and Windows.

If a location is there

Remove location from a photo writes a copy without it, and Verify metadata removed compares the two files. For an iPhone share, Share iPhone photos without location.

FAQ

How do I check where a photo was taken?

Drop the JPEG, PNG or WebP on this page. If the file stores GPS tags, the page prints the latitude and longitude and links to a map. If it prints nothing, the file has no location tags this parser reads.

Is the photo uploaded?

No. The file is parsed in your browser tab. In the measured runs below, no request went to another host. The OpenStreetMap link is a separate click and sends only the coordinates.

Why does an iPhone photo show nothing?

HEIC is not opened by this page. Photos shared as Most Compatible may be JPEG (Apple's wording is "may convert"). Also, apps often recompress a photo and drop its tags.

What is the difference from the image metadata viewer?

Same parser. This page puts the location first and explains what the coordinates can and cannot show. The image metadata viewer is the general page for camera, date, XMP and IPTC fields.
