Remove a photo location on Mac and Windows?

Mac

Preview, for macOS versions the guide lists through macOS 27 Golden Gate: if a photo contains GPS information, Preview can show a world map and a street map. Tools, Show Location Info. Gray means the image doesn’t contain location information. Show in Maps opens the street map.

Photos embeds coordinates when Camera has Location Services. Apple says those coordinates come from cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The Map collection includes only pictures with embedded GPS. To stop collection: Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera, Never. To share without the location: Share Sheet, Options, turn off Location. “Location Not Included” shows above Options.

Hide Location in Photos is Apple’s control. It is not the same as this site’s JPEG rebuild, and this page does not claim they leave identical bytes.

Windows

Document Inspector is for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio. It is not a photo GPS editor. A Windows location-service setting is not, by itself, a rewrite of a JPEG on disk. Until a current Microsoft article spells out a file-property removal path, this site will not invent the clicks.

Drop the JPEG, PNG, or WebP on the photo location viewer. If latitude and longitude are printed, the Metadata Cleaner can write a copy without the usual container metadata, and verify compares the two files. HEIC is still not opened by the viewer.

Questions

How do I see the place in Preview?

Apple’s Preview guide: open the photo, choose Tools, then Show Location Info. If that item is gray, the image doesn’t contain location information. Scroll to the GPS section and click Show in Maps for a street map.

How do I remove it in Photos?

On iPhone or iPad, Apple’s Personal Safety guide says Photos, Albums, open the photo, More, Adjust Info, Adjust Location, No Location. On a Mac: Image, Location, then Hide Location or Revert to Original Location.

What about Windows?

No current Microsoft Support article found in this session documents a File Explorer “Remove Properties and Personal Information” path for photos. Use the browser photo location viewer to see whether GPS tags are present, then the Metadata Cleaner if you want a copy without them.
