Remove location from a photo before you share it.
Phone photos can store latitude, longitude, and altitude in a GPS block. This page opens the Metadata Cleaner, which rebuilds a JPEG, PNG, or WebP without that block. It also drops the rest of the container metadata. It does not blur a street sign in the picture. For a single iPhone share, the share sheet has its own Location switch under Options; this page is for files you already hold.

Location tags the cleaner drops
GPS fields left out of the new file:
- GPS Latitude & Longitude (exact geographic map coordinates)
- GPS Altitude & Reference (elevation above sea level)
- GPS TimeStamp & DateStamp (exact satellite time of capture)
- GPS Positioning Error & Precision (DOP / accuracy meters)
- GPS Processing Method & Location Names (cell tower / Wi-Fi tags)
- Apple / Android hardware geotagging markers
What this does not do:
- It is not a GPS-only edit. Camera EXIF, XMP, and IPTC are left out of the new file too
- A house number, trail sign, or skyline in the picture is still visible
- JPEG and WebP are re-encoded at quality 0.95. PNG is lossless. The original file stays put
- HEIC is not opened. Export a JPEG if the phone saved a HEIC
How to remove GPS from a photo
See if a map pin is in the file
Open the image metadata viewer. If a GPS block is present, latitude and longitude are listed on their own. No row means this viewer did not find a GPS tag.
Clean a JPEG, PNG, or WebP
Use the button above and drop that photo into the Metadata Cleaner. The cleaner does not offer a control that removes only the location.
Save the new photo
Download the cleaned copy. Keep the original if you still want the camera data for your own archive.
Re-check before you send
Open the download in the viewer. The GPS coordinates from the fixture-style tags should be absent. Then look at the picture itself before you post it.
Location Stripping Benchmark Evidence
Fixtures MR-JPG-001 and MR-WEBP-003 carried GPS coordinates, including the Tokyo WebP case. After the canvas re-encode those coordinates were absent. The browser check covered the JPEG cleaner path. A location that is visible in the picture is outside that test.
View 2026 Metadata Removal BenchmarkWhat a GPS-only delete left behind, 26 October 2026
On 26 October 2026 this site built one synthetic JPEG with Pillow 10.2.0 at quality 90, 960 by 640 pixels. ExifTool 12.76 then wrote Make CreatorPrivacyKit, Model SyntheticFixture, LensModel FixtureLens, DateTimeOriginal 2026:10:26 12:00:00, Artist CPK Fixture, ImageDescription 2026-10-26 strip fixture, Copyright Fixture only, GPS 35 deg 0' 0.00" N and 139 deg 0' 0.00" E, altitude 12 m above sea level, XMP-dc:Description "synthetic fixture, not a residence", and IPTC Keywords fixture. The coordinates were typed. They are not a residence and they did not come from a GPS receiver. The file was not uploaded.
Four copies of that 157,107-byte file were then processed. ExifTool 12.76 used -overwrite_original -gps:all= on one copy and -overwrite_original -all= on another. mat2 0.13.4 used --inplace on a third copy. The fourth copy was opened in headless Chrome 154.0.8037.92, launched with --no-sandbox and --disable-dev-shm-usage. That run called createImageBitmap, drew the bitmap to a canvas with getContext("2d", { alpha: true }), and saved canvas.toBlob("image/jpeg", 0.95). Those are the JPEG steps in sanitizeImage in metadata-cleaner.js. The bundled function was not called, and the button on this page was not clicked.
Pillow 10.2.0 decoded every file to 960 by 640 RGB, 1,843,200 bytes. The source, the -gps:all= copy, and the -all= copy share decoded-pixel SHA-256 49e03beeb23cf101e13471821cabbd1c8c711f8fb295e41856347279c9fd1c2e. mat2 differs: e0152c412262edc0dcfc31158439b2a2a17f0ba54c7019db126d11e888e4898e. The canvas file differs: 6fdc3430801fe6ffdd0831f4c8f59120d45d73bbacfc4e11b8072c8716ae09cc.
The button on this page is the canvas path, not exiftool -gps:all=. On this fixture, -gps:all= is the only method that removed GPS and kept Make, Model, the date, the XMP description, and the IPTC keyword, with decoded pixels identical to the source. The canvas file dropped those camera tags, changed the pixels, grew from 157,107 bytes to 160,408, and gained the sRGB ICC profile. There is still no control on this page that deletes only GPS.
metadataremover.ai, as read on 26 October 2026, publishes the one JPEG noted above and says Privacy Safe normally preserves the ICC profile and does not change compressed pixels. It does not publish this side-by-side of -gps:all=, -all=, mat2, and a canvas re-encode. This site did not re-run that tool. ExifStrip’s location-only preset was not re-tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove GPS from a photo?
Confirm the coordinates in the image metadata viewer, run the photo through the Metadata Cleaner, and read the download again. The new JPEG, PNG, or WebP is built without the original GPS block.
Does remove GPS from photo upload the file?
No. Remove GPS from photo on this page rebuilds a JPEG, PNG, or WebP in this browser. The original stays on your device. There is no GPS-only mode: camera EXIF, XMP, and IPTC are left out of the new file too.
Can I delete the geotag and keep the camera settings?
Not here. ExifStrip’s guide describes a location-only preset. This cleaner has no such preset. Removing the location also leaves camera EXIF, XMP, and IPTC out of the new file.
Do WhatsApp, Telegram, or email remove the location for me?
Treat that as unproven unless you check the delivered file. WhatsApp Help calls HD a quality setting and documents a separate document send up to 2 GB. Telegram’s public Premium post describes file uploads up to 2 GB, or 4 GB with Premium. Gmail Help limits personal attachments to 25 MB. A file send or an email attachment can carry the original photo. This site has not published a dated GPS pass or fail for those apps.
Does a missing GPS tag mean the photo has no place?
No. The tag can be absent while the picture still shows a recognizable place. Removing metadata is not a blur tool.
Is the photo uploaded to remove the location?
No. The cleaner runs in this browser. The original file is not modified in place.
