Metadata stripping makes a new file. It is not a cloak.

“Remove metadata” sounds like erasing a secret. Technically you export a copy whose EXIF, XMP, IPTC and C2PA packets are gone or replaced. The picture can still be the same picture.

What is metadata stripping?

“Remove metadata” sounds like erasing a secret. Technically you export a copy whose EXIF, XMP, IPTC and C2PA packets are gone or replaced. The picture can still be the same picture. The original on disk is unchanged unless you delete it yourself.

What a stripper can honestly claim

For this kit: JPEG, PNG and WEBP sharing copies are re-encoded through Canvas, which drops the usual header metadata. MP4/MOV support walks boxes and can remove supported udta/meta/C2PA UUID atoms without transcoding the media samples.

That is a local, browser-side rewrite of the copy you download. The original on disk is unchanged unless you delete it yourself.

What it cannot claim

  • It does not remove faces, documents, or UI in the frame.
  • It does not remove pixel-domain watermarks such as SynthID.
  • It does not guarantee Instagram, X, or Xiaohongshu will drop an “AI info” label — those products use other signals too.
  • HEIC originals are not processed here.
  • It is not legal anonymity.

When it is the right move

You inspected the file, you saw GPS or a serial or a C2PA packet you do not want on the copy you send, and you still want the picture. Export, keep the master, send the copy. Related: social apps and metadata.

Common questions

Is a screenshot a metadata strip?
It is a new raster that usually lacks the original headers. It is a poor strip: quality drops, and on-screen text remains. Screenshots.
